Choosing the right martial arts school in White Rock can feel overwhelming. The names of the styles, the belt colours, the contract language - none of it tells you whether your kid (or you) will enjoy showing up week after week. Here's how to actually evaluate a school in one visit.
1. Watch a class before you ask any questions
Are the students smiling? Are the instructors patient with struggling kids? Are the lower belts being looked after by higher belts? You learn more from five minutes of observation than from a sales pitch.
2. Check the head instructor's certifications
Look for someone with at least a 3rd-degree black belt who has been actively teaching for at least five years. Lineage matters too - ask which organization certifies their rank.
3. Ask about safety and class size
How many students per instructor? What's the protocol for new students? Do they use full sparring gear? A confident school will have clear answers.
4. Look at the curriculum
Does the school teach a clear progression with belts, forms, self-defence, sparring, and weapons? Or is it just cardio kickboxing with a uniform? Both can be great, but make sure you know which one you're buying.
5. Avoid these red flags
- Long-term contracts you can't cancel without paying out
- High-pressure sales after a single trial class
- Instructors yelling at kids who make mistakes
- No clear answer about how testing works or what it costs
- Mats that are dirty, cracked, or unsafe
- Promising a black belt in a fixed timeframe (it's not a promise - it's a result of effort)
6. Ask for a free trial
A great school is confident enough in its experience to give you a no-pressure trial. If they hesitate, that tells you a lot.
7. Trust your kid's instincts
Watch your child after the class. If they're talking about it the whole way home, you've probably found the right school.
